Beware the Worship of Mammon

The Worship of MammonYeah, that’s the sermon for today.  When I was a kid, my grandmother – no dummy by the way – would occasionally admonish me with tidbits like “pride goeth before the fall” or “beware the worship of Mammon”.  Of course, I didn’t have a clue what she was talking about – didn’t really figure it out until she was long gone.  Still, those sayings are suddenly resonating in this new age of Robber Barons.  Here’s a note from Wikipedia about Mammon:

“Under the influence of the Social Gospel movement American populists, progressives and “muck-rakers” during the generation of 1880-1925 used “Mammon” with specific reference to the consolidated wealth and power of the banking and corporate institutions headquartered on Wall Street and their predacious activities nationwide.”

Did you catch the recent attack by the House Republicans on their ethics committee?  ( Link to gutting before they got cold feet.)  Did you read the headlines today about the expected confirmation of the billionaire Republican appointments without the usual ethics vetting and disclosures?  ( New York Times  article linked.)  Do you think these Republicans have any values besides making themselves rich?  Not that I can see.  Mr. Trump – do you really think we are going to worship you and your money?  Get real.
