Yesterday, Germany announced a hydrogen powered train. See “Germany unveils zero-emission that only emits steam.” According to the article in the Independent, “The iLint is powered by huge lithium ion batteries, and these get their energy from a hydrogen fuel tank on the roof of the train. The hydrail can travel almost 500 miles per day at speeds of up to 87mph, and the only sound it gives off comes from the wheels and air resistance.”
Yesterday, Norway announced that over half of all new cars on the road are electric or hybrid. See this article in the Independent. An excerpt: “‘This is a milestone on Norway’s road to an electric car fleet,’ Climate and Environment minister Vidar Helgesen told AFP. ‘The transport sector is the biggest challenge for climate policy in the decade ahead. We need to reduce (CO2) emissions by at least 40 per cent by 2030 and … this requires the electrification of the car fleet,’ he added.”
Both Germany and Norway provide universal health care for their population and have standards of education and living that substantially exceed that in the United States.
Meanwhile, in the United States, the Republicans in our Congress announced a new bill, as a replacement for Obamacare, that would substantially restrict access to health care for millions of Americans. Earlier this year, Congress confirmed Scott Pruitt as head of the Environmental Protection Agency, notwithstanding Pruitt’s legacy in denying global warming and in shilling for the oil industry. And now, Mr. Trump promises the completion of a pipeline to tap the tar sands of Canada, one of the dirtier forms of fossil fuel.
Given that access to health care in the “wealthiest country on earth” should be a basic human right, and given that scientific understanding of the processes of global warming have been understood for over a hundred years, there is obviously a serious problem with governance in the United States. Responsibility for that problem now lies directly at the feet of Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell and the right-wing, corporate dominated Congress and at the feet of Mr. Trump and his alt-right enabled administration. When it comes right down to it, the solution is simple. Throw the bums out.
